Episode 28: How to Talk to a Loved One About Suicide

9.28.26 | Skills | 41 min

Talking about suicide can feel scary, especially when you’re worried you’ll say the wrong thing or won’t know what to do if someone says “yes.”

In this episode, we break down how to talk to someone you love when you’re worried they may be thinking about suicide. We introduce CLEAR, a simple framework to help you notice warning signs, ask directly about suicide, listen and validate, connect someone with support, and follow up afterward. We also tackle common fears, including what to do if they get angry, refuse to talk, or you worry that what you do won’t be enough.

You don’t need to be a therapist or have the perfect words. You just need to know how to start the conversation, and what you can do next.
